When your child melts down over a broken biscuit or refuses to leave the park, what is actually happening in their brain? Perhaps they shout “it is not fair” with surprising intensity. While this can feel like stubbornness, recent research reveals a different story.
Cognitive inflexibility is not a choice or a sign of defiance. Instead, it is a thinking style with distinct brain patterns. Because of this, understanding the “why” helps us move from frustration to connection.
What Is Cognitive Inflexibility?
Cognitive inflexibility describes a specific way the brain processes information. In this pattern, the brain often:
- Struggles to change ideas or plans.
- Sticks to one way of doing things.
- Finds it hard to cope when something unexpected happens.
A major 2024 meta-analysis by Lage and colleagues analysed 59 studies. The findings were clear. Autistic individuals show greater difficulties with cognitive flexibility. Furthermore, this pattern holds across childhood and into adulthood. Similarly, research on ADHD shows that these challenges are a key feature for many children.
The Hidden Strengths
Before we look at the challenges, it is important to see the flip side. Rigid thinking often comes with remarkable strengths. Children with this profile often notice patterns that others miss. Additionally, they show a deep commitment to what matters to them. Consequently, they are often the people who uphold rules and maintain consistency.
The Link to Mental Health
A 2022 review by Faja and colleagues found something crucial. High levels of cognitive inflexibility are linked to anxiety and low mood. Moreover, it is a pathway through which emotional distress continues over time.
However, there is hope. Increased flexibility acts as a buffer against the demands of life. So, supporting flexibility is not just about reducing meltdowns. Instead, it is about easing the long-term emotional load on the child.
Why Fairness Feels So Big
When a neurodiverse child screams “it is not fair,” their brain is placing weight on information differently. Specifically, they focus more on outcomes and less on intentions. For instance, if two children get different sized snacks, the brain shouts “unfair” before it can process that one child wasn’t as hungry. Therefore, this is a processing difference rather than a moral failing.
The Two-Phase Process of Flexibility
Research shows that being flexible requires two distinct actions in the brain:
- Inhibition: First, the brain must turn off the old rule.
- Activation: Then, the brain must turn on the new perspective.
For neurodiverse brains, the “inhibition” phase is where the struggle happens. The brain keeps signalling that the first rule is the only rule. So, the child is not being difficult. Instead, their brain is working overtime to “switch off” a thought that feels like an absolute truth.
What Doesn’t Help and What Does
When the brain’s alarm is blaring, logic usually will not land. In fact, arguing about the facts often escalates the situation. Instead, try these three steps:
1. Validation
Name the feeling and its size. For example, try saying, “Your fairness brain is shouting right now and that feels huge.” This shows you are on the same team.
2. Externalising
Treat the feeling as something separate from the child. Outside of the heat of the moment, you can draw the “Fairness Monster” or use a scale. This helps the child move from “I am the problem” to “There is a problem we can solve together.”
3. Building Flexibility in Quiet Moments
Flexible thinking grows best when the nervous system is calm. First, try small changes in rules during play. Next, use stories to explore different endings to a problem. Finally, celebrate whenever they try a “brain experiment” by doing something a new way.
The Neuro-affirming Goal
Recent intervention research emphasises something important. High cognitive inflexibility can make traditional, talk-heavy therapy feel confusing or unhelpful.
From a neuroaffirming lens, this means:
- First, recognising cognitive inflexibility as an individual difference, not a behaviour to be managed
- Second, reducing expectations about where someone should be and meeting them where they are
- Third, adapting therapy to their cognitive style with more structure, visuals, concrete tasks, and shorter verbal loads
- Finally, helping them build their own workarounds and adaptive strategies, rather than forcing neurotypical thinking patterns
Therapy should help the person find their own preferences and adaptive strategies that respect their neurotype. It shouldn’t try to fix their brain.
The Goal Isn’t to Stop the Feeling
The goal is never to eliminate rigid thinking or stop the feelings that come with it. Rather, the goal is to help the child:
- Feel understood
- Feel safe enough to regulate
- Separate themselves from the problem
- Slowly build more flexible responses over time
Understanding the neuroscience helps us respond with co-regulation, not control.
When Your Child Says It’s Not Fair
Next time you hear those words, try this approach:
In the moment:
- First, validate the size of the feeling. Your fairness brain is really loud right now
- Then, offer co-regulation through your calm presence
- Meanwhile, avoid logic, explanations, or trying to convince them otherwise
- Remember, their brain is genuinely stuck between inhibiting the old rule and activating a new perspective
Outside the moment:
- Externalise the fairness feeling. Maybe draw it, give it a silly voice, or use a scale
- Then, practise tiny moments of flexibility through play
- Next, celebrate brain experiments when they try switching, even if it doesn’t work perfectly
- Finally, build predictability with room for small, supported variations

Cognitive inflexibility is not a behaviour problem or a character flaw. Instead, it is a thinking style with a distinct brain signature, real strengths, and genuine challenges when the world demands constant adaptation.
The research is clear. We can support flexible thinking through patient, playful, scaffolded practice. Not by demanding flexibility in moments of overwhelm. Rather, by building it gently when the nervous system is calm.
